Beyond the Wall: Why JamRock is More Than a Competition
If you’ve never been to a climbing competition, you might expect the tense, hushed silence of a tennis match or the fierce, narrow-eyed rivalry of a sprint. But JamRock isn’t your typical sporting event.
This year, the air at Diamond Plaza was thick with more than just chalk dust; it was heavy with a kind of communal joy that you rarely see when there’s a trophy on the line!
The Sound of Support
There is something genuinely radical about watching a climber reach for a crux move, only to hear their direct opponent shouting "Beta!" (advice) or "Allez!" from the mats below.
At JamRock, we saw 54 competitors take to the walls, but it felt more like 150 people working together to solve a giant, vertical puzzle. We saw finalists cheering for the very people who might knock them off the podium.
In the climbing world, we don’t just want to win; we want to see the route sent, regardless of who is wearing the harness.
By the Numbers (The Results)
While the spirit was communal, the talent was undeniable. This year, we celebrated winners across multiple categories:
Total Competitors: 55
Total Routes Set: 124
Smiles Witnessed: Immeasurable.
A Community Built on the Ground
The reason JamRock is so unique isn't just because climbing is a "nice" sport. It’s because the Nairobi climbing community is intentional.
Whether it was the staff who spent days route-setting until they were seeing holds in their sleep, or the spectators who filled the gym with a roar that could be heard from the parking lot, this event was a reflection of our daily life at the gym. We are a community that believes that my success doesn't take away from yours. In fact, when you succeed, it shows me what’s possible.
Stay Wild, Stay Vertical
To everyone who competed, everyone who brushed a hold for a friend, and everyone who lost their voice cheering: Thank you. You proved that while the "Jam" is in the name, the "Rock" is in the foundation of the friendships we’ve built here.
Keep climbing, keep sharing the beta, and we’ll see you back on the wall tomorrow.
