Family Life's Newest Addition

Welcome to the Dunavant family!

We are so excited to welcome a new family to the our Family Life team! We sat down with Rebekah-Caye Dunavant to hear more about her family's experience, why they chose to come to Kenya with BlueSky, and what they're most looking forward to!

What Inspired You to Come and Live in Kenya and work at BlueSky?

Our journey to Kenya began over a decade ago when we worked as counselors for BlueSky in the summer of 2014. At the time, we were dating and felt a strong calling from God to move overseas. We wanted to experience a mission trip together, to see how we would live and act in such a situation. By the end of that summer, we had countless great memories and some challenges, but it strengthened our resolve to continue our relationship. Eventually, we got married and continued praying about where God might lead us. While there wasn't an opportunity at BlueSky at the time, we felt that God was preparing us for the future.

In 2021, our church in the U.S. recognized our calling to be sent somewhere. One day, while browsing the BlueSky website, we found a listing for a role that seemed perfect for us. With the help of a friend from our church's mission office, we set up a meeting and began the process of exploring this opportunity. We met with Tammy, the BlueSky Global Executive Director, in Nashville, Tennessee, and discussed everything that had happened in the last 10 years, the future of BlueSky, and what the Family Life branch entails. This began our journey towards joining BlueSky in Nairobi.

In August of 2023, we visited Nairobi, meeting the team and exploring the city. We prayed and evaluated if this was the right move for our family. After returning, we felt confident that God was leading us to Nairobi. We spent nine months preparing, including selling our belongings, attending a training program, packing, and saying goodbye to loved ones. Despite the challenges, we felt that God had been preparing us for this moment.

Since our initial visit in 2014, when our love for BlueSky first began, we have always kept BlueSky in our hearts and followed their progress. When we saw more opportunities emerging, we felt a renewed calling. A significant moment was during a conference in August 2022, where we felt God calling us to work with young adults. This aligned perfectly with Blue Sky's vision to start a young adult ministry, confirming our path.

What are you most looking forward to as you start this new season?

We are thrilled about the new ministry for 18-30-year-olds that BlueSky is starting. This age group is transient and dynamic, making it an exciting and challenging demographic to serve. We're looking forward to seeing how this ministry will develop and impact the lives of young adults in Nairobi.

Our focus is on relational ministry, building year-round relationships through activities like Bible studies, coffee meetups, board games, and more. We want to create a community where people feel supported, prayed for, and encouraged in their spiritual journey. Since we are pioneering this ministry, and while there isn't a set structure yet, we are eager to see it grow. We're looking for young adults to join our Bible studies and social activities, volunteers to serve alongside us, and prayer partners to support us. We hope to build a core team to invest in one another and expand the ministry further.

What are some of the joys so far of Living in Nairobi?

The people of Nairobi have been incredibly kind and welcoming, making our transition smoother. The city's vibrant culture, beautiful nature, and delicious food add to our excitement. We look forward to exploring Kenya's national parks and enjoying the natural beauty that surrounds us.

Our move to Kenya is a testament to God's timing and preparation. We are excited to embark on this journey with BlueSky, reaching young adults and building a strong, supportive community in Nairobi.
